AsahiShimbun retracts ‘comfort women’ articles

The Asahi Shimbun published articles in itsTuesday morning edition that acknowledged there were factual errors in parts ofits past coverage of the issue of so-called comfort women.
In a front-page byline piece, Asahi ShimbunExecutive Editor Nobuyuki Sugiura wrote, “We’ve concluded that the reportscontain factual errors.” The newspaper also carried a two-page spread examiningits past coverage of the issue.
According to the articles, The AsahiShimbun published articles at least 16 times between 1982 and the early 1990sbased on witness accounts made by Seiji Yoshida, who claimed to have forciblytaken away local women from Jeju Island, South Korea, to serve as comfortwomen.
Though The Asahi Shimbun conductedadditional fact-gathering activities, it was unable to obtain corroborativeevidence to back up Yoshida’s statements. The paper therefore concluded it wasunreliable and decided to withdraw the articles.
In response to The Asahi Shimbun’s move,Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a press conference on Tuesdaymorning: “I’d like to continue to explain our nation’s stance on the comfortwomen issue. I hope correct historical perception will be formed based onobjective facts.”

AsahiShimbun admits errors in past ‘comfort women’ stories
by Reiji Yoshida, Staff Writer
Aug 5, 2014
The Asahi Shimbun admitted Tuesday toserious errors in many articles on the “comfort women” issue, retracting allstories going back decades that quoted a Japanese man who claimed he kidnappedabout 200 Korean women and forced them to work at wartime Japanese militarybrothels.
The correction came more than 20 yearsafter the Sankei Shimbun based on studies by noted historian Ikuhiko Hata firstpointed out apparent errors in the man’s account in April 1992.
Hata and the Sankei said there was noevidence supporting the account of Seiji Yoshida, who claimed he conductedsomething akin to “human hunting” by rounding up about 200 women on Jeju-doIsland in present-day South Korea.
All local residents interviewed by Hatadenied Yoshida’s claims. Mainstream historians have now agreed that hisstatements were false.
Yoshida, who claimed to have worked for alabor recruitment organization in Yamaguchi Prefecture during the war, reportedlydied in July 2000.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has repeatedlycalled out the Asahi for quoting Yoshida’s accounts, saying the paper’s“erroneous reports” have magnified the issues involving the so-called comfortwomen.
Asked to comment on the Asahi’s retractionof the articles during his regular news conference Tuesday, Chief CabinetSecretary Yoshihide Suga said: “We hope correct recognition of the history willbe formed, based on objective facts.”
The term comfort woman is a euphemismreferring to women forced into sexual servitude in wartime Japanese militarybrothels. Media outlets and activists often describe them as “sex slaves,”given the harsh conditions they faced.
The Asahi repeatedly reported on Yoshida’saccounts in the 1980s and 1990s.
The paper has faced growing criticism aboutits coverage of comfort women, prompting the paper on Tuesday to carry twopages of feature articles looking into its previous coverage.
In April and May this year, the Asahidispatched reporters to the island and interviewed about 40 elderly residentsand concluded that Yoshida’s accounts “are false.”
As far as the present-day Korean Peninsulais concerned, the Asahi, like most mainstream Japanese historians, maintainedthat no hard evidence had been found to show the Japanese military was directlyinvolved in recruiting women to the brothel system against their will.
But the Asahi, again like mainstreamhistorians, maintained that most “comfort women” from Korea were forced to workas prostitutes against their will since they were recruited by private-sectorbrokers through human trafficking.
Before winning his second primeministership in December 2012, Abe had suggested he might revise or retract thekey government apology to the women, issued by Chief Cabinet Secretary YoheiKono in 1993.
But to date, Abe has upheld the Konostatement, which admitted that the Japanese authorities and military were“directly or indirectly, involved in the establishment and management of thecomfort stations and the transfer of comfort women.”
“The (Japanese) government study hasrevealed that in many cases they were recruited against their own will, throughcoaxing, coercion, etc., and that, at times, administrative/military personneldirectly took part in the recruitments. They lived in misery at comfortstations under a coercive atmosphere,” the Kono statement reads.
